First up, we had an extraordinary steel EMTBs by a Spanish manufacturer Abums. In talking to Ibai, one of the two owners, it was clear that they were passionate cyclists coming from a enduro racing and moto background. They were especially excited about the uniquely profiled down tube that created an efficient space for their battery pack, while providing the rigidity that they needed. These folks hail from Basque and have been developing mountain bikes, first a high pivot Enduro, for seven years and are dedicated to the durability of steel construction. The Model One bike pictured is 23.5 kg, a mullet, with a 78° seat tube angle, 63.5° head to angle and is available in three sizes. It can also be ordered as a dual 29 and can be configured with external routing. The Model One features a mid-power lightweight Mahle drive system and is available in clear Cerracoated or powder coat finishes starting at €10,500 with a two month lead time. abums.cc

Cha

Cha ‘Chabayaba’ Tori, Josep developed the Cha device which deposits a graphite dust on your chain in a quick, mess-free and refillable fashion. The simple C-shape tool holds an insert that contains one of three graphite formulations based on riding conditions, with the harsher condition formulations featuring more sticky additives.

Nonetheless, I would imagine that for a lot of folks in the UK, this product is only viable for MTB use during the summer but, you may have an indoor trainer, and this could be a perfect low mess solution, especially if you use or move the trainer in tight spaces. thecha.cc

Dirty Sixer

David, the owner of Dirty Sixer has been making bicycles and components for tall people for 15 years. He will soon be launching his 32 inch wheel dual suspension bike but, perhaps a more widely popular product might be his nameless (help a brother out in the comments) pedals. They are perfectly flat, measuring a world record 160 X 130 mm with two cartridge bearings and a steel axle so strong that it broke the testing machine, David says that these petals are for basketball players (note the top view) and recommends a size euro 44 or large larger. About £160. dirtysixer.com

Velduro

New-ish to the UK, Velduro has a distribution centre in Chorley with a dispersed UK team, including Elliot Heap as a rider rep in The North, and others in Wales and central England. Valduro have online direct sales and are in the process of building out a limited number of dealers that are capable of selling both complete bikes and frame sets outfitted in a bespoke fashion. velduro.co.uk

Forex

I spoke to Velduro’s UK head and he said that in addition to the Velduro brand, which is Australian based, they will be distributing another Australian brand, the confusingly named Forx line of components, that include cranks and chain rings. Focusing initially on an enduro category bike, the base model of the Valdoro the Rogue X starts at about £7000 and the higher and bike with full Fox Factory suspension goes for £9000 pounds, with both featuring the flavor of the day Avinox M2S motor. Next year, Velduro plan to introduce a 150 mm trail bike and a heavy hitting version of the Rogue.

the orb

Probably, the most uniquely, innovative bike that I saw at Sea Otter Europe was, surprisingly, a kids bike, the Orbea Kimu Learning (names, people!) which had a host of features that will enable your little one to quickly and safely develop bicycle riding skills. Balance bikes have changed the game of learning how to ride a bike by promoting a natural turn that includes leaning the bike. However, there’s still often a bit of a transition to a new bike with different controls and the necessity for peddling. The Kimo Learning features a unique foot platform that hides a crank set, making the pedal action the only point of difference in the transition to bicycle riding. On top of that, the Kimu is lightweight, has a one-piece bar and stem (honestly, who ever moves their bars?), enclosed drivetrain, disc brakes with little levers, a simple return to center steering mechanism and a nice grab handle underneath the seat. For DIY crowd out there, you could probably improvise the steering system, as it is simply a lightweight bungee cord attached between the frame and fork, which is removable. I estimate that a bike like this will shave hours, perhaps days off of learning how to ride confidently. orbea.com

Castles SOG

Not a bike product but a bicycle marketing idea, the Castelli SOG (Spirit Of Gravel) team is seeking to grow the pie. The sponsored riders are privateers that are sponsored, in part, because they engage in their communities. Unlike some of the gravel teams, there is no team strategy or program to move through a race calendar together, rather they operate as fellow venturers mutually supporting each other as they cross paths and are able. Additionally, at SOE, the Castelli SOG booth was supporting nonprofits with a fundraiser that included tie dye your own T-shirts (which you know Dieter and I took advantage of!). Speaking to Miranda and Laura of Castelli, it was clear that they recognise gravel cycling as an opportunity to take back the spirit of what was early mountain biking, a sort of excited contagion, which caused the greatest expansion in cycling popularity in the last 50 years. castelli-cycling.com

Brompton x Hope

And, I’ll just leave this Brompton X Hope project here. The folks at Hope weren’t too forthcoming about whether they were going to go all in on the Brompton front in the future, but hinted at some products being available in 2027. hopetech.com
