Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) suffered a very heavy crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen and looked like he was left with injuries that may impact his spring campaign.
Van Aert was among a number of favourites, including Mads Pedersen (Lidl Trek) and Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), who crashed in the front group of the race with about 67km remaining in the race.
One notable feature was that those who came down stayed on the tarmac for a long time, making no effort to get back on their bikes as they were completely unable to do so.
Van Aert was taken hospital in Ronse, with Het Nieuwsblad reporting he has suffered unspecified fractures, as well as the abrasions to his back, shoulders and arms that were visible during the TV coverage before he was stretchered away.
The race was eventually won, with a solo effort, by Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike).
