Liam Crowley takes final stage in Charleville, Charles Bailey wins yellow

Liam Crowley has continued his strong run of performances this season with victory on the final stage today of the A2-A3 Charleville Two Day.

However, while the O’Leary Stone Kanturk man was celebrating his stage 3 win, Foran CC’s Charles Bailey and Thomas Springbett were relishing their 1-2 in the final general classification.

The Foran pair had broken clear on the opening stage yesterday and gained three minutes on the peloton; Springbett winning that opener from team mate Bailey after their two-man breakaway.

Bailey followed up his 2nd place of yesterday by winning this morning’s stage 2 TT. That meant he was very much in the driving seat – and yellow jersey – going into this afternoon’s final stage road race.

Bailey clocked a time of 7:32 in the stage 2 TT this morning to win by 13 seconds from Niall McCarthy of McNally Swords. Irish junior international Stefan Caulfield-Dreier of Killarney Cycling Club was 3rd at 20 seconds. The yellow jersey in the TT, stage 1 winner Bailey, placed 4th in the test at 21 seconds.

That result meant Bailey held the race lead by 22 seconds from Springbett going into the final stage this afternoon, with TT runner-up McCarthy next overall; sitting 3rd but at 3:16.

That road race stage 3 ended in a bunch sprint; won by Crowley from Daryl Kearns (Panduit Carrick Wheelers). Stefan Caulfield-Dreier of Killarney Cycling Club took the final place on the podium.

The bunch sprint finish to the final stage meant the top of the GC was unchanged; Bailey winning overall by 22 seconds from Springbett with McCarthy 3rd in the final GC at 3:16.
