Former Grand Tour champion Tom Dumoulin delivered a strong performance in his second marathon, improving on his debut by more than two minutes at the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon. The Dutchman, a 2017 Giro d’Italia winner and two-time Grand Tour runner-up, completed the 26.2-mile course in 2:27:12, shaving time off his Amsterdam debut where he struggled with aggressive early pacing. Dumoulin acknowledged he started too fast last year, splitting 1:09 for the first half before fading to 1:20 in the second and suffering cramps. This time, he paced more effectively, resulting in a satisfying personal result despite not matching the elite lead pack.

Dumoulin’s shift from professional cycling to endurance running came after he retired at age 31 in 2022, citing mental fatigue despite a decorated career that included Giro d’Italia glory, world time-trial champion status, and stage wins across the Tour de France, Giro, and Vuelta a España. Before taking up marathon running, he posted a half-marathon best of 1:10:16 in 2023. While Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race in 2:24:36 and Swedish runner Andreas Almgren claimed victory in 2:06:01, Dumoulin focused on his own progression, expressing delight on social media and noting he’d be “shuffling the streets” of New York for recovery. His performance marks a successful transition from Grand Tour contention to the marathon distance, with room for further improvement as he refines his race-day strategy.
