Starling Cycles has launched the Dive, a limited-edition 26” wheeled mountain bike that blends retro vibes with modern design. Despite debuting on April Fool’s Day, the Dive is no joke—it’s a serious nod to the golden era of 26” MTBs, inspired by the grungy dive bars of Bristol where Starling’s founder, Joe McEwan, once partied and raced. The Dive is a 160mm travel, single-pivot, full-suspension steel bike designed from the ground up for 26” wheels, offering a nostalgic yet capable ride.

Key Features of the Starling Dive:

  • Frame Material: The front triangle is handcrafted in Bristol, UK, using Reynolds 853 steel tubing, while the rear triangle is made from heat-treated chromoly. The frame includes a machined BB shell/main pivot junction for added stiffness and strength.
  • Suspension: The Dive features a single-pivot suspension linkage and comes with a Fox DHX2 Factory Coil shock (230x65mm). The adjustable shock mount allows travel to be reduced to 135mm with a 210x55mm shock.
  • Fork Compatibility: Designed around a 170mm travel, 27.5” Fox 38 fork, the Dive is intended to run a 26” wheel. Starling recommends matching the fork’s travel to the rear shock for optimal geometry.
  • Modern Touches: The frame includes a UDH derailleur hanger, Boost 148x12mm rear axle, integrated upper chain guide, ISCG05 bash guard mount, and external cable routing. It also features a 73mm threaded BB and an aluminum seat mast insert to prevent seized posts.
  • Tire Clearance: The rear end accommodates tires up to 26×2.6”.
  • Water Bottle Mount: All frame sizes include one water bottle mount—small frames have it on the down tube, while medium and large frames have it under the top tube.

Geometry:

The Dive’s geometry is modern, ensuring it can handle today’s trails. It’s available in small, medium, and large sizes, with geometry numbers provided for 26” wheels only. While it’s possible to set it up as a 26/27.5” MX bike, Starling emphasizes the retro spirit of the build.

Build Options:

  • Frame Only: £2046.67
  • Frame + Fox DHX2 Factory Coil Shock: £2584.17
  • Complete Build: Available by request, with custom specs and pricing.

Finishes:

The Dive debuts a new IPA/Dark Lacquer raw finish, which protects the frame from rust while maintaining its unpainted aesthetic. This finish will later be available on all Starling bikes. The Dive is also offered in four other colors: Steel is Teal, Powder Pink, Landy Green, and Anodic Bronze.

Availability:

Orders for the Dive will be accepted until May 1st or until stock runs out. Frames are expected to ship in 8-12 weeks.

Why the Dive?

The Dive is a celebration of the fun and nostalgia of 26” MTBs, but with modern performance. It’s a unique offering for riders who appreciate the retro charm of 26” wheels but want a bike that can handle contemporary trails. Starling’s attention to detail, from the handcrafted steel frame to the modern components, ensures the Dive is both a tribute to the past and a capable machine for the present.
