Sam Bennett has signed for Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, the team known this year as AG2R Citroën Team. The Irish rider had already confirmed in recent weeks he was leaving Bora-hansgrohe after a second, two-year, stint at the German team which proved more muted than the first.

News the 33-year-old Irishman will ride for the French World Tour team for the next couple of seasons has been well flagged for months but has been officially confirmed today, Monday.

The team is undergoing changes at present, with Bennett’s signing one part of that process, as riders move on or retire, including former Olympic champion, Greg Van Avermaet.

The French team has also parted company with BMC as bike suppliers and will ride Van Rysel bikes – owned by the French sports retail chain Decathlon – next year. Decathlon – which previously worked with the team from 2002 to 2007 – was also unveiled as a new title sponsor today at a press event in France streamed live online.

The sponsorship with Decathlon – which will also supply Van Rysel helmets and glasses – has been agreed on a five-year basis as the retailer seeks to corner a larger section of the ‘experienced cyclist’ market.

Lots more to come today.
