The Retrospec Valen Rev+ is an absolute blast, earning a thumbs-up from everyone in our office who hopped on for a ride. This moto-inspired e-bike from Retrospec has a unique blend of style, practicality, and a whole lot of fun.

Born in 2009 as a budget-friendly bike brand for college students, Retrospec has since grown into a diverse outdoor gear company. Yet, they still retain that core focus on accessibility and enjoyment that made their original bikes a hit.

First things first, moto bikes have a reputation for having quick acceleration to zip around town or across campus and here the Valen Rev+ did not disappoint. The 750W motor paired to its cadence sensor activation made this motor stand out for sharp, punchy accelerations that consistently left smiles on our faces.

We found the Valen Rev+ extremely comfortable to ride thanks to its saddle and 20×4″ tires; it isn’t built for long-distance touring. As is common with moto- or moped-style e-bikes, its design is likely to limit comfortable pedaling for taller riders. It did, however, excel at zipping around town with its powerful motor and cool, eye-catching retro-inspired design.

Another nod to Retrospec goes to the bike’s suspension. While it does not have full suspension, the Valen Rev+ has a double crowned front fork with 100mm of travel; we found it to do a good job of eating up road imperfections along our route and even light off-roading.

Priced at just $1699, with a 28 mph top speed and 720Wh battery, we were intrigued by the Valen Rev+’s potential. After extensive testing, we’ve gathered several hours of ride time and loads of data to share. In this Retrospec Valen Rev+ review, we’ll dive into all of our testing results, initial impressions and help you decide if this e-moped from Retrospec is the right fit for you.

Reach on the Valen Rev+ is largely determined by how far (or close) the rider sits on the moto saddle to the handlebars, and by adjusting the tilt of the bars.

Retrospect Beaumont Rev 2 Review: Speed Test

Clearly, speed is where the Valen Rev+ was designed to shine. Sure, most e-bikes are legally capped at 28 MPH, but it’s still important to gauge the bike’s ability to deliver accurate speeds based on current PAS levels as well as analyzing the bikes power delivery. Is it smooth and even across all 6 levels? Is it punchy and quick? Or, is it more relaxed and lacking in acceleration? These are the types of answers we aim to answer with our Electric Bike Report speed tests.

Starting off in PAS 0 (no motor assist) I was keeping a casual pace at around 8.8 mph. Kicking things off, I turned on PAS 1 and my speed picked up slightly to 10.5 mph. Moving to PAS 2, the bike reached 14.1 mph which felt like a great cruising speed. Then, I moved up to PAS 3 where the bike hit a top speed of 16.0 mph. In PAS 4 the bike reached 18.1 mph, in PAS 5 it reached 19.0 mph, and finally in PAS 6, the bike’s fastest speed was 19.0 mph.

From the testing, we can gather the power distribution is fairly even between all 6 levels of pedal assist. The acceleration is punchy, which I should clarify, it’s punchy in a good way, like smile-inducing punchy, not uncomfortable or unsteady punchy. The cadence sensor activates quickly within a quarter to half turn and you are off to the races.

Overall, the bike lives up to its reputation for getting you from point A to point B quickly. For those of you who like to keep things fast and zip around town, the Valen Rev+ has no trouble answering that need for speed.

Retrospec Valen Rev+ Review: Range Test

Range is just one of those factors (like speed) where everyone is eager to see testing results. In our range test (described in the infographic above), we aim to gauge just how many miles you can get out of the Retrospec Valen Rev+ using a real-world ride on a single charge, and to its true e-moped theme, we did this at the highest PAS level, PAS 6.

Our range test finished with the Valen Rev+ covering 36.45 miles over the course of 2 hours and 23 minutes, averaging a speed of 15.3 mph and climbing a total elevation of 329 ft.

To place that into some context, the e-moped class, across all e-mopeds we have tested, has an average range at MAX PAS of 30.93 miles. So, it’s fair to say the Retrospec Valen Rev+ is pulling ahead of its peers when it comes to the distance you can cover on a single charge of the battery.

Those range test numbers tell a clear story. Riders who prioritize long, throttle-heavy rides will find the Valen Rev+ a great fit. Its ability to sustain high speeds for an extended duration makes it ideal for commuters who cover significant distances, or anyone who simply enjoys exploring further without constantly worrying about the battery meter. If going the distance without sacrificing speed is your jam, the Valen Rev+ deserves a serious look.

Retrospec Valen Rev+ Review: Hill Test

Speed and Range are all good, but, does the Valen Rev+ have the torque needed to conquer our famous Hell Hole HIll Test? We were pumped to find out! Our hill test (which is described above) is just one of those hills that makes grown bikes cry.

The Valen Rev + performed well on our hill test which we were pleased to see. First in our throttle only run up the hill (using no leg power or pedal assist at all) the Valen Rev + made it up Hell Hole with an average speed of 14.7 mph and a time of 1 minute and 14 seconds. Then, with the maximum level of pedal assist in PAS 6, our tester Justin managed the climb with an average speed of 14.9 miles per hour in 1 minute, 13 seconds.

When we zoom out and look at the class of e-moped as a whole, this result places the Valen Rev + near the top of the pack not only in the moped class, but a top 15 results across hundreds of e-bikes we’ve tested to date.

So, what can we take from all this? Not only is the Valen Rev+ a fast e-bike, but its 65 Nm of torque and 850W of peaking wattage really shines in the hill climbing department, with the gusto to beat e-bikes spec’d much higher.

Overall, its performance in the hill test proved the Valen Rev+ to be a solid option, even for those in areas with beastly hills like our own beloved Hell Hole.

Retrospec Valen Rev+ Review: Brake Test


OK, well it’s got speed, range and can climb even the toughest hills. So, does the Valen Rev+ have the stopping power needed to bring it safely to a halt without any pucker factor? That’s where our EBR Brake Test (described above) comes into the equation.

The Valen Rev + scored a solid brake test result across 3 runs which averaged a stopping distance of 20’ 7”. Once again, when we back up and take a look at this comparatively, the Valen Rev+ has a braking score that places it near the top of the herd with one of the best braking distances for any e-moped we have tested to date.

We have always liked Tektro hydraulic disc brakes as they are known industry-wide for reliability, not to mention, it’s easy to get them serviced when needed. So, it’s safe to say the braking on the Valen Rev+ is very good, and although anecdotal, my time on the Valen Rev+ also gave me great braking everytime I needed it in real-world riding.

Retrospec Valen Rev+ Review: Ride Quality

So, we’ve made it clear you can expect a grinning good time on the Valen Rev+ thanks to its speed and performance so far. But, is there any downside?

Well, kind of.

You see, one thing you’ll need to accept with e-mopeds is the limited pedal extension. As with many similar bikes, the Valen Rev 2 sits low and lacks adjustable seat posts, so taller riders are less likely to get a full leg extension for efficient pedaling.

Retrospec says this bike will fit riders between the heights of 5’ to 6’ 4”. That number seems accurate, but again, remember our asterisk of the limited pedal extension. If you’re around 5’7″ or shorter, this might not be an issue, but taller riders (like myself at 5’11”) will still be able to pedal without major discomfort.

We were happy to note that the Valen Rev+ excels in comfort. The plush moto seat, front fork, and big 20×4″ tires soaked up road imperfections smoothly during our testing. While rear suspension would be a nice bonus, it’s not essential for a comfy ride.

The 8-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain and its gear range proved versatile for most terrain. The combination of a 38T chainring and 11-34 cassette paired well to make for practical pedaling, even when the battery ran dry on my range test. Front and rear LED lights are useful for commuters, but turn signals would be a welcome safety upgrade.

We found the cockpit’s full-color LCD display to be informative, displaying important information like current wattage usage, speed and PAS level. There is a push throttle near the left grip that I found to be intuitive in its placement and easy to use as I never had to look down at my hand to find it. Finally, the powerful 750W rear hub motor delivered quick acceleration, matching the Valen Rev+’s moto-inspired feel.

Overall, the Retrospec Valen Rev+ delivered a fast and happiness-inducing ride. It’s one of those bikes that got us grinning the instant the motor kicked in, and that grin just got wider with every mile.

The range surprised us, easily holding its own against even pricier competitors. This meant explore further and keep on riding without constantly worrying about a recharge.

The power delivery isn’t just about acceleration – the smoothness across all six levels lets you cruise comfortably. And when it comes to slowing things down, those Tektro disc brakes provide reliable stopping power – essential for a bike designed to handle urban traffic.

Of course, there’s always room for a few upgrades, like turn signals for increased safety and a slightly taller frame for riders pushing six feet and beyond. But if you’re after that e-moped feeling – zipping around town in style, relying mostly on throttle power, and turning heads with retro looks – we think the Retrospec Valen Rev + absolutely nails it.

With its great price, outstanding performance, and undeniable charm, the Valen Rev+ offers serious fun for anyone looking to take their first step into the world of e-mopeds, or for those just wanting a playful, yet, capable ride.
