Retrospec Boca Rev Electric Tricycle Review

The first thing I evaluate on any trike is its stability. Several factors influence a trike’s overall stability, but two straightforward ways to achieve it are by ensuring spacious rear wheel spacing (while keeping it narrow enough to fit through a doorway) and opting for shorter tire diameters (taller designs on three wheels are more prone to tipping).

The Boca Rev strikes a nice balance with one of the widest axle spacings we’ve seen, paired with 20 x 3” tires. The wide base and low center of gravity give it a stable, balanced feel, allowing for greater confidence when moving quickly in straight lines. Its well-distributed weight further enhances stability, even when turning—though, as with any trike, we recommend taking turns slowly and cautiously.

The tires’ width adds to the stability, with a touch of tread providing extra traction. While it’s not designed for intense off-roading, it handles finer gravel on flat roads well, giving you a bit more grip when needed.

The Boca Rev includes a host of practical features: fenders and a chain guard to keep you clean, a headlight and taillight (which also functions as a brake light) for visibility, and reflectors for added safety. A rear basket comes standard, making it easy to haul gear. Additionally, the cushy saddle and adjustable backrest make the ride exceptionally comfortable, perfect for exploring the neighborhood or taking longer trips.

Some people might bemoan the lack of suspension fork, but on a ride that has you sitting so upright, and while on a plush saddle, I didn’t feel it needed it, and the steel fork felt just fine to me.

The 17.5” standover height enhances approachability, though the recommended rider height starts at 5’5”—a bit taller than average. If needed, you could cut down the excess seat post length to accommodate shorter riders.

The frame is available in Matcha or Matte Graphite paint options and features a foldable design, similar to other trikes like the Lectric XP Trike or Mokwheel Granite. While the folded dimensions aren’t the most compact, the collapsing stem might make it easier to load into an SUV. Fortunately, the folding clamp is sturdy, and the frame doesn’t suffer from unnecessary flex when riding.

One downside of the folding design is the limited rise of the telescoping handlebars. While the trike offers great leg extension for riders up to 6’5”, taller riders might find the hand placement lower than ideal.

The cockpit is clean and simple, with no shifter to clutter the layout. The display is large, bright, and easy to read, and the trike has a polished look thanks to its neatly braided cables.

Overall, the Boca Rev offers excellent value. It’s competitively priced among the best electric trikes we’ve tested and excels in comfort, handling, and performance, all while keeping costs relatively low.
