Tributes have been paid to Shay Murphy, the very popular Dubliner who was a member of Lucan CRC for decades and who very sadly died on Sunday. One of those honouring Shay was former elite Irish TT champion Conn McDunphy, his former club mate.
Just after winning the final stage of the UCI-ranked Tour de Beauce in Canada, McDunphy took to social media to dedicate that victory to Shay, who was one of a number of figures in Lucan CRC that paid a big part in McDunphy’s career.
“That’s for you boss,” McDunphy said in a post accompanied by a photograph of him winning today’s stage in Canada. “One of the best died today. I owe so much to you. RIP Shay Murphy.”
Lucan CRC, whose members will be devasted at losing Shay, issued a brief tribute, saying: “Our good friend Shay Murphy has passed may he rest in peace.”
Cycling Leinster, which counted Shay as an official over the years, said it was very upset at news of the passing of Shay, who raced for many years as a younger man. The provincial body said it learned “with great sadness” of Shay’s passing.
“He was a stalwart of cycling in Ireland giving a lot of his time to his club LCRC and his province Cycling Leinster,” it said. “Shay was a member of Cycling Leinster for a number of years as a selector.
“In recent years he took on the role of social media manager and was constantly keeping everybody updated about our teams, upcoming events and general cycling information.
“He did this with great pride and was happy to inform us of the number of hits, shares and likes we received. Within Cycling Leinster Shay was a calm voice when discussing plans, problems or changes relating to anything in the cycling world, he always had improvement for cycling in the forefront of his mind.”
Cycling Leinster extended its sympathies to Shay’s wife, Stephanie, daughter Chelsea, son Graham and all his friends and clubmates.
Those are very much sentiments stickybottle would also like to echo, especially as Shay was such a decent man who did so much for Irish cycling and to help young riders.
Usher Irish Road Club also extended its condolences to Shay’s family, saying he had “passed away today after a courageous battle”.
“Lucan Cycling Club and Cycling Leinster have lost a great supporter of Irish Cycling, specially at junior level,” it said. “Shay was a great guy and a fine rider himself, with a wicked sprint on him. Rest in peace Shay, God bless.”
