Gardaí are investigating a serious road crash involving a cyclist on the N17 in Co Mayo, which occurred on Friday afternoon. The incident has left the cyclist, a man in his 60s, with life-threatening injuries. He was discovered in the road at approximately 12:20 pm and was subsequently transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The crash took place on the N17 between Mayo Airport and Charlestown. Gardaí have not yet confirmed whether another road user was involved in the incident. However, they have issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly those who may have been in the area between 11:45 am and 12:20 pm, to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in any camera footage, including dashcam recordings, that could help clarify the circumstances of the crash.

To assist with the investigation, a technical examination of the scene is being conducted by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. As a result, a stop/go system has been implemented on the affected stretch of road to manage traffic while the examination is underway.

Gardaí are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Swinford Garda Station at 094 925 2990, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any local Garda station. They emphasize the importance of public cooperation in piecing together the events leading to the crash.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by cyclists on Irish roads and underscores the need for vigilance and caution among all road users. Gardaí continue to investigate the matter and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
