Hydrating When It’s Cold

This video explains why proper hydration is even more important in the winter months, and how to calculate your needs.

It’s common to think you don’t need to worry about hydration when it’s cold because you’re not sweating as much, but this is simply not true. Winter demands proper hydration as much as summer, but for different reasons. Why?

First, your sweat rate might decrease in cold weather, but you’ll still sweat regardless, just not as much. Plus, with less humidity in winter, and more time indoors with heaters on, you tend to dry out, which increases your need for hydration!

With water comprising approximately 70% of our system, it’s necessary for every process of our body, including muscle contraction, energy production, cell turn-over and metabolism. If you’re not taking in enough water, you’re performing at a lower capacity.

Did you know that just a 2% decrease in hydration can result in a 20% decrease in your overall performance? No matter the season or climate, your body needs water, period.

Watch this video for my quick tips on:

  • The minimum amount of fluid you need over the course of the day and when exercising, based on your body weight.
  • How to track whether you’re drinking enough, (hint – you’ll need your weight scale).
  • How to calculate your sweat rate, and why you need to calculate it in different seasons, climates and temperatures.

As mentioned in the video, check out this blog: Staying Hydrated: A Step-By-Step Approach to Calculating Sweat Rate.
