Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Hitch Rack With Trike Adapter
We love e-trikes. Love them. By offering a rider two forms of assistance—both a motor and stability—e-trikes offer many people who thought they could no longer ride a chance to get out and feel the wind on their skin.
What we don’t love is trying to move them by any method other than in the saddle. While some of the new designs can be made more compact with a folding handlebar or even frame, they haven’t been easy to move without a pickup or SUV. Until now.
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider Hitch Rack was designed specifically for e-bikes, and Hollywood Racks has introduced a new accessory for it: an e-trike adapter. With the adapter added the rack can still carry one e-bike; the trike adapter replaces one bike carrier.
A hitch rack like the Sport Rider saves riders from lifting the e-trike into the back of an SUV or pickup bed; the wheel trays sit closer to the ground, making loading noticeably easier. It would be nice if there were some sort of ramp to be able to roll the e-trike into place because that would simplify loading immeasurably, but from an engineering standpoint that would be a tough item to design, so we aren’t knocking Hollywood Racks for not producing one for the Sport Rider with Trike adapter.
E-trikes tend to weigh more than regular e-bikes—not always, but Rad Power’s RadTrike tips the scale at 82 lbs., which exceeds the single e-bike weight capacity of most hitch racks. Hollywood Racks gave their trike adapter the strength necessary to carry three-wheelers weighing up to 90 lbs. That weight rating isn’t listed on their website, but we contacted them and that was what they reported; we don’t want anyone thinking we made that up.
The arm that normally secures the e-bike to the rack won’t reach the e-trike’s frame so two tie-down straps secure the trike to the rack.
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider hitch rack fits in 2-in. hitches; the manufacturer says it should not be used with a 1 ¼-in. to 2-in. adapter; that will void the warranty. Other necessary restrictions include no hitch extenders and it’s not to be used on an RV, fifth wheel, travel trailer or towed vehicle, and no covers on the e-trike.
Hollywood Racks includes two bright fabric flags that attach to the e-trike’s wheels to alert following drivers to the presence of the loaded rack.
