Ben Healy’s bike from this year’s Giro d’Italia has proven a real winner in an online auction held by his team, EF Education-EasyPost

Ben Healy enjoyed an incredible ride on Giro d’Italia this year, with a stage win and holding the climbers’ jersey for a time. And now a bike he used on the Italian Grand Tour has put in a big performance during an online auction.

When a bidding war broke out, between bidders from China, the bids shot up as the closing deadline neared today. In the end, Healy’s Cannondale SuperSix EVO sold for far more than any of his team mates’ bikes in the same auction.

Indeed, the winning bid for the Irishman’s bike was more than twice as high as the next biggest price fetched for the other bikes and close to four times the money most of team bikes went for in the same auction.

The auction ended today on MatchWornShirt, with the successful bidder securing Healy’s bike for the princely sum of €18,738. That compares to €7,503 for the bike Healy’s Dutch team mate, Marijn van den Berg, raced on this year.

Hugh Carthy’s bike went for the next biggest sum, fetching €6,039 while other bikes all went for between €5,000 and €6,000 and were raced this year by Andrea Piccolo, Neilson Powless, Rigoberto Uran and Alberto Bettiol.

Healy’s bike was the only one from the Giro and, as such, was the only one for sale that was not in the team’s stock livery for the 2023 season. Instead, Healy’s was hand painted by Cannondale using excess paint to reflect the team’s special Giro d’Italia kit design.

The bidding for the bike really hotted up over the last 48 hours and was at €8,229 at the start of the week. By the start of today, Saturday, it had increased to €12,733 before a flurry of 11 bids today – with two Chinese bidders going head-to-head – pushing it up to a final price of €18,738.

The buyer, if based in Asia as suggested, will also face shipping costs of about €1,250, pushing the total cost to €20,000. The bike is not the one Healy won Giro stage 8 on, but is instead the one he was riding later in the race, including when he was 2nd to Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) on stage 15 to Bergamo.
