Dean Harvey (Trinity Racing) has lived up to his billing as the pre-race favourite in the elite men’s race at the National Cyclocross Championships, taking the second senior crown of his career.
The 20-year-old carried the weight of expectation into the race in Limerick today, promoted by Greenmount Cycling Academy, but had the legs to match.
“It’s hard when you’re coming in as a favourite and do what you need to do but I’m glad I did what I could do to my best,” he said after his title-winning ride.
“I’m happy with how it went. It definitely wasn’t an easy race, I think it went as good as it could have gone.
“I really liked the track. It’s a proper cross course, it had a bit of everything in it. The club here did a great job of making the course tough and fast, and good to race on.”
Harvey went into an early lead in very cold conditions and though he was chased hard by Kevin McCambridge (Trinity Racing) and Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles), he retained his Irish crown.
McCambridge came through for the silver medal with Moore rounding out the podium in 3rd place.
