Dublin City Council is hosting a special event to celebrate International Women’s Day, featuring a film screening and a cycling-focused panel discussion. The event, taking place on Thursday, March 6th, at the Generator Dublin in Smithfield, Dublin’s north inner city, will include notable figures from the cycling community, such as Josephine Healion, a Paralympic rider and World Championship medalist who represented Ireland at the Paris Games last year.

The event will kick off with the screening of Wadjda, a critically acclaimed Saudi Arabian film about a determined 10-year-old girl who dreams of buying a bike to race her friend Abdullah. Her mother, however, resists due to societal pressures, highlighting cultural barriers to women’s cycling in Saudi Arabia. The film sets the stage for a discussion on women’s experiences and challenges in the cycling world.

Following the film, a panel discussion will be chaired by Siobhán McNamara, vice-chair of Dublin Cycling Campaign. Joining her on the panel are Catríona Nally from the Ballymun Youth Action Project and Recovery Road Cycling Club, and Josephine Healion, who brings her expertise and experience as a Paralympic athlete and advocate for cycling.

The event is designed to foster dialogue around women’s participation in cycling, addressing both local and global perspectives. It also aims to celebrate the achievements of women in the sport and encourage greater inclusivity. Doors open at 6:00 PM, with the event starting at 6:30 PM. Tickets are priced at €10 and include a complimentary drink—beer, wine, spirits, or soft drinks. Attendees can book their tickets online via the provided link.

This event underscores Dublin City Council’s commitment to promoting cycling and gender equality, offering a platform for discussion, inspiration, and community engagement in honor of International Women’s Day.
