The Moonlight TK1 Folding Trike is a Class 2 electric tricycle that combines throttle and pedal assistance to reach speeds of up to 16 mph. It features five pedal assist levels, each with a preset speed limit, and a cadence sensor that activates the motor as long as the cranks are turning. The trike was tested on a flat section of the Virgin River Trail System in Southern Utah to evaluate its performance, including speed limits, pedal assistance, and throttle response. The results showed that the five speed limits are evenly spaced, with approximately a 2 mph difference between each level, providing a smooth and intuitive transition between speeds. This design allows for precise control over the trike’s speed, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.
The pedal assist system offers a noticeable boost in speed, particularly in the lower levels, which can be surprising for new riders but is generally enjoyable and manageable. The lower power levels (PAS 1 and 2) are ideal for getting accustomed to the trike or conserving battery life, while PAS 3 is suitable for casual cruising. The higher levels (PAS 4 and 5) are better for faster travel or tackling inclines, though the trike’s climbing ability was not specifically tested in this evaluation. The trike’s maximum speed was recorded at 15.5 mph, slightly below the advertised 16 mph, which is considered safe and acceptable for a trike. A lighter rider might achieve the full 16 mph, but the difference is minimal and not a significant concern.
One notable observation is the occurrence of “ghost pedaling” between 13 and 14 mph, where the rider must pedal rapidly to contribute to the trike’s movement or simply turn the cranks casually to keep the motor engaged. This is a common feature in single-speed trikes and results in a low-effort pedaling experience. However, it may not appeal to those expecting a bike-like feel. Additionally, starting the trike from a standstill requires significant effort, as the motor engages after about half a turn of the cranks. It is recommended to use the throttle to initiate movement and switch to pedaling once the trike is in motion.
The throttle was found to be well-calibrated, providing a steady increase in power up to 15.5 mph without feeling sluggish or overpowered. This ensures a safe and controlled riding experience, making the throttle a reliable feature for users. Overall, the Moonlight TK1 Folding Trike offers a balanced combination of pedal assistance and throttle control, with a design that prioritizes safety and ease of use. Its evenly spaced speed limits, intuitive pedal assist system, and well-tuned throttle make it a suitable option for a variety of riders, from beginners to those seeking a convenient and efficient mode of transportation.
