Philip Lavery wins the 2017 Friends First Laragh Classic, the race that cannot take place next weekend after late safety requests by gardai

St Tiernan’s Cycling Club has said the Laragh Classic, which had been planned for next Sunday, cannot take place after late safety-related requests were made by the gardaí.

The club said the events, in Co Wicklow, have now been postponed but its still hopes to run the races at some point later in the season. It appears St Tiernan’s was not give enough notice to implement extra safety elements requested by the Garda.

“Due to extra safety requirements requested by the gardaí, of which we did not have time to implement due to the late notice, St Tiernan’s CC have had to postpone the Laragh Classic,” the club said in a short statement this evening.

“The race directors would like to thank everyone involved with our event this year. We would especially like to thank our two new sponsors KSN Horizon – who were sponsoring our A1-A2 Laragh Classic and the A3-Junior Martin Vereker race – and AIG who came on board to sponsor our women’s only Laragh Classic race. We hope to hold this race later in the year.”
