Ireland last had a major Gran Fondo in the wake of the Giro d’Italia’s visit to these shores back in 2014, with Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo being promoted as a legacy event to mark the visit of the Italian Grand Tour to Northern Ireland and the Republic.

However, while that was last run almost a decade ago, a new Gran Fondo, with UCI status, is expected to return to Ireland next year. Stickybottle understands it is in the planning stages and will soon be announced, to take place in the west of Ireland.

The Wild Atlantic Way Gran Fondo, which is expected to be part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, is expected to take place out of Galway on April 7th, though news of the new event – and specific details – are yet to be announced.

The Irish partner for the event is Titan Experience, a Dublin-based firm which has already partnered with Cycling Ireland on the Great Dublin Bike Ride.

The company is based in Belfield, Dublin 4, and describes itself as “an award winning marketing and events agency specialising in brand/sponsor activation, event management, marketing communications and corporate wellness”.

The UCI Gran Fondo World Series – formerly the UCI World Cycling Tour – is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Some 25-30 qualifier events will qualify the top 25 per cent in each age group to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, the former UCI Masters Road World Championships
