Ekoi’s new Pure Aero TT helmet is a bold entry into the competitive world of aero helmets, designed with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and already boasting impressive victories at the professional level. Inspired by the trend of increasingly extreme aerodynamic designs, the Pure Aero features an oversized cowl and visor, aiming to maximize aerodynamic efficiency while meeting UCI regulations. The helmet has been worn by top athletes like Patrick Lange, who secured his third Ironman World Championship wearing the Pure Aero, and Jelle Geens, who won the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
Ekoi’s development process was rapid and innovative. The company utilized AI to analyze existing helmet designs and create a unique shape, followed by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to refine the design. The final step involved wind tunnel testing to ensure the helmet’s aerodynamic performance. Ekoi focused on three key goals: optimizing comfort and ergonomics for prolonged aero positioning, ensuring excellent visibility while in an aero tuck, and achieving superior aerodynamic performance. To make the helmet versatile for different body types, Ekoi based the design on 3D scans of three top athletes—Stéphane Rossetto, Patrick Lange, and Chris Froome—who represent a range of sizes and shapes.
The Pure Aero features a wide, bulbous shell with a short tail and a large integrated visor that flares slightly at the bottom to redirect airflow around the rider’s face. Ekoi claims the helmet reduces aerodynamic drag by 6% compared to other helmets on the market, saving 13 watts at an average speed of 50 km/h. The helmet’s construction includes a polycarbonate shell over EPS foam, a smoke-tinted visor with 22% Visible Light Transmission (VLT), and internal ventilation channels that eliminate the need for external vents. It also incorporates a BOA dial fit adjustment system, a Fidlock magnetic buckle for the chinstrap, and a single size that fits heads measuring 55-60cm. The helmet weighs 415 grams.
Priced at $395 (or 350-400€ depending on location), the Pure Aero is available directly from Ekoi in six color options. Riders can choose between a white or black base shell, with red, blue, or holographic silver racing stripes, and simple white or black Ekoi logos.
The helmet’s success in professional racing, including victories at the Tour de France and Ironman World Championships, underscores its performance and potential appeal to both professional and amateur athletes seeking a competitive edge. Ekoi’s use of cutting-edge technology and rapid development highlights the brand’s commitment to innovation in the cycling industry.
