Conor Murphy has made a big impression on the domestic and international scene since turning junior this year and now the 17-year-old has recorded the first ever sub 18-minute 10 mile TT by an Irish junior.

At the Ernie Magwood Super 6 Series latest round, Murphy – competing for Caldwell Cycles at home and U19 Academy Région Sud powered by Giant abroad – stopped the clock at 17:59.

That will be a new Irish record, subject to ratification by Cycling Ireland, and lowers his time of 18:20 at the last round of the series, having recorded a time of 18:37 at the previous round. And with his latest time – and his rate of progress this year – the teenager is now bearing down on Ryan Mullen’s elite Irish 10 mile TT record.

Mullen, now a World Tour pro focused more on lead-outs than finely turning his TT performances, set that Irish elite record – 17:42 – way back in August, 2014; a full decade ago.

On the Frosses course on Thursday evening, Murphy won the latest round of the Ernie Magwood Series, with his 17:59 time. He claimed victory on the night, by 33 seconds, from Ian Inglis (Kinning Cycles). Rounding out the podium on the night was Ronan Grimes.

Orwell Wheelers rider Grimes has won paracycling TT Worlds and Europeans gold and is set for the Paralympics later this month. Grimes was 1:36 off Murphy’s time on Thursday night.

Subject to ratification, Grimes broke his MC4 10 mile TT record from 2019, which was 20:32; a great sign ahead of the Paralympics.

In 4th place was comeback man Bryan McCrystal. The Louth man, a former top Ironman athlete who has come back to cycling this year, stopped the clock at 19:38.

McCrystal, who coaches Murphy, was 1:39 off his charge’s time. Fastest woman on the night was Karen Hull (Phoenix CC) who recorded a time of 23:38.
