The two team mates, who were headed for1st and 2nd after dropping the other breakaway men, made a mess of this roundabout
Two breakaway riders – and team mates – suffered a heart stopping moment in the final at the opening stage of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (2.Pro) when they went the wrong way.
Alessandro Tonelli and Manuele Tarozzi, both of VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, had put in a team master class on the stage. They got clear in a seven-man breakaway that gained nine minutes at one point before dropping their fellow escapes with an attack with about 20km to go.
However, when they came to a roundabout in the final kilometre, with over one minute in hand on the nearest chasers, they somehow went right when they should have continued to the next exit, even though tape was stretched across the wrong exit in a bid to seal it off.
Police officers by the roadside tried to gesture them back on course, but to no avail. However, they eventually realised their mistake and righted themselves, even though the plastic tape got caught in one of their bikes.
Tonelli and Tarozzi crossed the line for a brilliant 1-2, some 1:09 up on Oier Lazkano (Movistar Team) with Alex Molenaar (Illes Balears Arabay Cycling) 4th at 1:11, with the top four all members of the breakaway that was up the road for almost 150km.
Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) won the bunch sprint for 5th, at 1:19, from Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla) and Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious), the latter having made a brave solo bid to catch the leaders on the run in.
