Ryan Mullen put in a huge turn on the front at the end of stage 3 on Tour Down Under today, with Danny van Poppel and Sam Welsford in his wheel.
The Irish rider, using his seated TT powered, turned out huge numbers during the 18 seconds Watts bazooka he put in to pull his riders to the very front just before the final sprint.
As second to last lead-out man for Bora-hansgrohe’s Welsford, Mullen took over on the front when two of the Soudal QuickStep riders pulled over. His data reveals an 18-scecond effort, during which he generated eye-watering Watts and speed.
His effort continued for 325m – a huge distance to ride flat out at stage end, especially considering the work he had already done to ensure his team mates were well positioned.
His average speed during that effort was 65.1kph, with a maximum of 66.2kmph. His average Watts ere 820, with a maximum of 968 and an average cadence of 111rpm.
“We use brawn as opposed to brains, and that clearly suits Sam,” Mullen told GCN in Australia. “He’s got the watts to handle it, and not a lot of sprinters do.
“A lot of guys like to come off the wheels, but Sam’s got the horsepower to actually take the wind on and just lay down the watts.”
