Cal Tutty rode his way into the Irish junior team set-up this year with impressive performances and is now looking to continue his development after signing for a Dutch junior team for next year.
The 17-year-old, who was 3rd in the junior road race at the National Road Championships in June and represented Ireland at the European Road Championships, told stickybottle he was “delighted” with his new opportunity.
He will ride for the Jegg DJR Academy next year on the road and will get his tenure underway with the team immediately on the cyclocross scene. He has come up through the ranks with Dungarvan Cycling Club
“I’m planning to race the remainder of the cyclocross season and the 2024 road season with Jegg,” he said. “I noticed their team set up when I raced in Acht Van Bladel (UCI 2.1) with the Munster Academy and I was impressed by it.
“I was also attracted to them because of their international race calendar featuring some of the big one day classics and junior UCI stage races. They also have some very good international riders including Patryk Goszczurny, who is the former youth Olympic TT champion.
“One of my Munster Academy team mates Willem O’Conner is also a member of Jegg. It will be nice to have a teammate to race with on home soil in the national series and other races.”
Tutty rode three stage races in Europe this year; Penn Ar Bed – Pays d’Iroise (2.1) in France, Acht van Bladel (2.1) in the Netherlands and La Ronde Des Vallées (2.1) in France.
He was also 3rd in the first-year junior category at the Junior Tour of Ireland and 8th first-year junior at the Junior Tour of Wales. On home roads he won The P J O’ Riordan Memorial this year as well as taking 3rd in the A3-Junior race at the Shay Elliott, the Ken Duff Memorial.
