Mathieu van der Poel may be one of the hottest properties in pro cycling but he has taken himself off the market for the remainder of his peak years after signing a new long-term contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck.

The road and cyclocross world champion will remain with the Belgian World Tour team until at least the end of 2028, when he will he aged 33 years. He has also signed a new 10-year agreement as an ambassador for the team’s bike sponsor, Canyon.

Furthermore, in a flurry of activity today around the team, its sponsor and star rider, Canyon has also extended its deal with Alpecin-Deceuninck.

The new core cycling team contract to the end of 2028 means Van der Poel will be racing under the Roodhooft brothers for 18 years by the time the deal expires. He started with them at the BOXX Veldritacademie club team back in 2011.

Van der Poel was already contracted to Alpecin-Deceuninck until the end of next year, meaning his new deal – on more money – scratches that previous contract and replaces it with his new deal involving an extra three years.

“This extension is a logical choice for me. I have felt particularly comfortable in the structures of Philip and Christoph Roodhooft from the beginning,” said Van der Poel. “I have grown together with the team and I still feel that we are making progress.

“And although we have already achieved many successes together, I am still hungry for more. Not unimportant in the fact is that Alpecin-Deceuninck is also multi-disciplinary. This is the perfect team to continue to combine road, mountain bike and cyclocross.”

On a joint statement, team owners Philip and Christoph Roodhooft said there was “no doubt that we are delighted with Mathieu van der Poel’s extended agreement”.

“We had a long-term plan with him from the beginning. The multidisciplinary vision was an important aspect of this. We quickly found each other in that as well. Over the years we have proven that our structure and vision works,” they said.

“It feels particularly good that we can also continue in the coming years. Just like Mathieu, we as a team are still hungry for more successes, and the world champion plays an important role in that, along with a number of other talents we have on board, both in the men’s and women’s teams.”
